Royal Rumble: Wrestlers who should have won the royal rumble

Royal Rumble has been a favourite PPV/PLE for hardcore wrestling fans and casual fans alike. Winning the Royal Rumble has launched the careers of many superstars, from legends like Stone Cold Steve Austin, Batista, and Shawn Michaels to modern talents like Bianca Belair, Rhea Ripley, and Becky Lynch.

The rules of the Royal Rumble are straightforward: 30 wrestlers enter the ring one after another, and the last person remaining wins. The victor gets the chance to face the world champion at WrestleMania.

Despite the success of many wrestlers in the industry, some have never had the chance to win the Royal Rumble.

Number 1: Mr. Perfect

Before 1993, there were no opportunities for the Royal Rumble winner to compete for a world championship. Yokozuna was the first to do so after winning in 1993. In retrospect, Mr. Perfect was a strong candidate for the 1990 Royal Rumble, which was ultimately won by Hulk Hogan.

Mr Perfect was one of the best technical wrestlers the industry had ever seen and winning would have further solidified his legacy.

Number 2: Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho was a fan favourite to win the Royal Rumble in both 2012 and 2017. In 2012, he made it to the final two alongside Sheamus; many felt that he should have won. Even though he ended up as a runner-up, he received a better booking against CM Punk and delivered a great performance in front of the Florida crowd.

In 2017, Jericho and Kevin Owens had one of the best storylines in WWE. Fans were hopeful for a Jericho victory, but Randy Orton emerged as the winner, last eliminating Roman Reigns.

Number 3: Daniel Bryan

Daniel Bryan had the kind of momentum that every wrestler dreams of. His “YES” movement captivated audiences, earning him a match against John Cena at SummerSlam 2013, which he won. However, HHH’s betrayal helped Randy Orton capitalize on that moment.

With the stage set for Bryan to win the Royal Rumble in 2014 and challenge Randy for the championship, WWE booked a surprise return for Batista, and Bryan did not even compete in the match.

After significant backlash, WWE changed course and allowed Bryan to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 30.

Number 4: CM Punk

In 2011, the Royal Rumble included 40 participants, yet the audience did not want Alberto Del Rio to win. CM Punk should have clinched the victory and gone on to challenge Edge for the World Championship at WrestleMania 27.

At that time, Punk was leading the Nexus, and his victory would have established them as a formidable threat once again.

Number 5: Dean Ambrose

In 2016, WWE struggled to get Roman Reigns over with the crowd, facing a significant backlash against the push. During the Royal Rumble that year, Reigns’ title was on the line, requiring him to defend it against 29 other competitors. Dean Ambrose was the new underdog babyface.

A win for Ambrose would have set up a compelling storyline, especially facing HHH, who eventually eliminated Ambrose. However, Roman Reigns went on to face HHH at WrestleMania 32, which was underwhelming.

Number 6: Shayna Baszler

Shayna Baszler was one of the most formidable wrestlers coming from NXT. Many believed she had the best chance to win the Royal Rumble in 2020.

However, Charlotte Flair won instead, setting up a match against NXT’s Rhea Ripley, which many considered poor booking. Eventually, Shayna won the Elimination Chamber and faced Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 36.

Honourable Mention: Kurt Angle

Kurt Angle’s legacy is immeasurable, yet not winning the Royal Rumble remains one of the biggest missed opportunities of his career.

He could have realistically claimed victory in the Rumble in 2002, 2004, and 2005. Oh It’s true it’s damn true!

In Conclusion:

Whoever wins the Royal Rumble whether the superstar is liked or disliked by WWE fans. it always creates excitement each Rumble season. The anticipation and unpredictability of the show enhance the overall experience.
